Mechanics

Mechanics is the science that studies the conditions of balance and motion in objects under the influence of various forces. The science of mechanics is one of the oldest branches of science. Archimedes (287-212 BC) studied levers. Galileo Galilei (1564-1642) experimented with pendulums to measure time. Isaac Newton (1642-1727) defined three laws that formed the basis of mechanics. Leonhard Euler (1707-1783), Jean le Rond d’Alambert (1717-1783), Joseph Louis Lagrange (1736-1813) are important scientists who contributed to the science of mechanics in history.

At undergraduate level :

In the field of rigid body mechanics;

Statics,
Dynamics

In the field of deformable bodies mechanics;

Strength of Materials I,
Strength of Materials II
courses are given. These courses are the mechanics courses that form the foundations of engineering in almost all engineering programs.

Among the Mechanics courses encountered in graduate programs, Elasticity theory, Plasticity theory, Plate theory, Finite element method can be counted.

Every problem involving forces can be defined as an area of interest in mechanics.

Among the areas of interest of the Mechanics Division: Structural mechanics, material mechanics, continuum mechanics, solid mechanics, smart structures and smart materials, reinforced concrete, steel and historical structures, experimental mechanics, earthquake engineering, fracture mechanics, composite material mechanics, numerical computation methods (finite differences, finite elements), structural health monitoring and strengthening, micro and nano mechanics.

In the Mechanics Division, TUBITAK, KOSGEB, UDAP, non-university projects and scientific research projects originating from our university are carried out. In the Structural Engineering Laboratory, where advanced research and tests in the field of Structural Mechanics are carried out, numerous experimental studies have been completed on strengthening techniques, innovative solutions for concrete prefabricated building systems, and seismic performance of new generation structural system designs, taking into account the defects of existing building-type structures in our country. Also high structures, steel bridges, etc. Non-laboratory tests and research are also carried out on the determination of the dynamic character of different types of existing civil engineering structures and the determination of their remaining life. Researchers in our department actively participate in the meetings of the National Structural Mechanics Laboratories, support the platform where researches in our country are discussed in the field of Mechanics and work on applicable engineering solutions within the framework of University-Industry cooperation.
